In this paper I examine the emergence of the women’s public sphere and its ritual power within the politics of Korean national and cultural memory in the post-colonial era. Recently since 2000, there has been seen frequently public commemorative rituals evoking abject non-normative female figures, living or dead, including military ‘comfort women’, sex workers, women victims of sexual violence. They have formed a ‘women’s sphere’ whose claims for the right of mourning and restitution counter the traumatic memory of the past and the present of Korean history. This idea of a ‘women’s sphere’ marks an emergent vision of a feminist public sphere in Korea, responding to a recent proliferation of disparate forms of feminist production, particularly in the websites, existing and newly emergent social media, street protests, women’s film festivals, and women shamans public ritual actions. I will analyze the case of women’s shamanic rites of mourning which were held by the feminist groups and conducted by female shamans for the dead souls of ‘comfort women’ in the public arena: in Women’s Development Center, Seoul (2003), in Pier of Tongyoung City, Kyungsang Province( 2004), in Old Town, Sunchon (2005), and in Seoul City Plaza (2013). The title of the shamanic ritual was “Ritual for De-resentment (解冤) and Repose of Souls (鎭魂) of ‘Comfort Women’ who were drafted to Imperial Japanese Military”. It was performed by the Association for Preservation of Hwanghae Province黃海道 Shamanistic Ritual, which consists of 10 main members and 20 sub members. The 32 feminist groups and civilian NGO groups supported and participated in the shamanic performances.
