Representation of East Asia in the Sino-Korean Atlases

Numerous extant copies of the Sino-Korean Atlases date from the 18th-19th centuries, but apparently rely on much earlier cartographical traditions. Yet, studies related to these Atlases are very few and mostly concerned with the first sheets – the ‘wheel’ maps representing the world as a nest of concentric zones and typologically similar to the mediaeval T-O mappaemonde. 

Dr. Vera Dorofeeva-Lichtmann will discuss the regional maps limited in the Atlases to China, Korea, Japan and Ryûkyû, the four countries of East Asia during the period of the Atlases’ circulation. The aim is to trace early prototypes of these regional maps and determine their interrelations.
